This is the second time of seeing Kiefer Sutherland. Yes, he’s off the films and TV, but this is no A-list actor relying on his name, he is a serious musician and writer with something to say Strolling onto a striking stage set at Wolverhampton’s KK’s Steel Mill, he looks confident and reassured.
Guitar over his shoulder, kicking off with the dark ‘Down Below’, complete with the first of many sensational guitar solos. Anyone with doubt that he’s serious wouldn’t take long to change their mind. The first of a few surprises tonight came with a cover of Garbage’s ‘Only Happy When It Rains’. Unexpected, yes, but it worked, and with the song ‘Something You Love’, Kiefer telling the large crowd, “I’m not one to give advice, but if I did, it would be this: life’s too short not to do something you love.” Spot on. Playing a good number of new tunes off the forthcoming album is risky, but he pulled it off, no question, keeping the attention of the KK’s crowd. And another cover, this time a song by the Marshall Tucker Band, ‘Can’t You See’, that really got them going. With ‘Simpler Time’, had Kiefer Sutherland saying what a lot of us older patrons believe, harking back to a time before phones, and computers. Then something you don’t see too often in an Americana/country show, the guitarist, Ashley Wilson, switching his guitar for a flying V! The show obviously took on a more rock vibe for a time and we loved it, and resuming with a Tex-Mex version of ‘In The Air Tonight’, wow.
Of course, its Kiefer Sutherland’s concert, but a special mention to his fabulous band – outstanding – as was the night. Kiefer’s parting words were, “I am Forever In Your Debt”. It’s our pleasure, Mr Sutherland.
