Gorillaz has shared a new eight-minute short film titled ‘The Mountain, The Moon Cave & The Sad God’ to mark the release of new album ‘The Mountain’, out now via the band’s own new label KONG.

Directed by Jamie Hewlett and THE LINE studio, the animated epic follows the adventures of band members Noodle, Murdoc, 2D and Russel as they journey across India, and explores album themes from the journey of life to the thrill of existence.

The new Gorillaz short film marks a return for artist and co-creator Jamie Hewlett to the purest form of his art, blending intricate detail with his signature, ever-evolving style. Directed by Hewlett alongside Max Taylor and Tim McCourt of BAFTA-nominated London-based animation studio THE LINE, the project took 18 months and thousands of artist hours to complete.

The film is a lovingly hand-crafted homage to the golden age of 2D animation, reimagining the world of Gorillaz through the timeless aesthetic of 1960s animated cinema. Hewlett worked closely with THE LINE to reinterpret the band using classic animation techniques, favouring hand-painted backgrounds, real materials, practical effects, and analogue limitations over modern shortcuts. The result is a richly textured short that celebrates the artistry of traditional animation and the human creativity behind it.

Gorillaz will hit the road with The Mountain Tour this spring, with support from Trueno on selected dates. They will also play a huge, one-off headline show at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in June, with support from Sparks and Trueno – full details below:
