sister ray davies

Sister Ray Davies have announced their first ever UK tour following the release of their acclaimed debut album ‘Holy Island’, out now via Sonic Cathedral and Well Kept Secret.

The Alabama shoegaze duo will play a run of headline shows this spring, alongside support slots with reformed shoegaze legends Chapterhouse and Japanese psych trailblazers Acid Mothers Temple.

Sister Ray Davies is made up of Adam Morrow and Jamie Sego. The pair met when Adam played on sessions at Jamie’s Portside Sound studio, the former Muscle Shoals Sound Studio B, for artists including John Paul White, Belle Adair and Donnie Fritts. They soon realised they had much in common, both personally and musically.

“We were mixing other work and always joked, ‘Well, if this was a shoegaze song we’d do this’,” says Adam. “It all felt so intuitive.”

Jamie explains that shoegaze has long been part of his formative musical experiences, from buying a Starflyer 59 CD as a teenager in the Bible Belt to being thrilled by the chainsaw guitars and girl group melodies of Ramones, and becoming enamoured with the fuzz, tremolo and reverb of 60s psych compilations. Adam points to influences such as Slowdive, Ride, Galaxie 500, Yo La Tengo and Talk Talk.

“It finally dawned on us,” Adam says. “Why don’t we lean into the kind of music we love listening to? How many times do we have to blast Souvlaki on the studio monitors before it clicks? We actually made the record before we had a band name.”

The name Sister Ray Davies blends a nod to The Velvet Underground with The Kinks frontman Ray Davies, reflecting the duo’s mix of American roots and Anglophile leanings.

‘Holy Island’ is a vibes-based concept album inspired by the island off the coast of Northumberland. The full-lengtha has earned widespread praise and is currently riding high in the Official Charts Independent Albums Breakers and Album Downloads charts.
