The Platinum-selling alt rockers formed back in 2001 with frontman Gerard Way alongside his younger brother Mikey on bass, drummer Matt Pelissier and guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero.

The quintet wasted no time hitting the road and recording their debut album. By the time they released ‘I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love’ in 2002, they had already carved out their signature pop-punk sound, blended with alt-rock intensity, emo angst, and a theatrical flair drawn from goth, classic rock, and heavy metal.

The album gained enough momentum and saw the band sign to a major label for their follow-up release, 2003s ‘Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge’, featuring hook-laden singles ‘Helena’ and ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise)’.

Pelissier was replaced by Bob Bryar on drums in 2004 and the band embarked on several high-profile tours with the likes of Green Day, Alkaline Trio and Taking Back Sunday.

My Chemical Romance broke into the mainstream with their third album, 2006s ‘The Black Parade’. A bold concept record echoing Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ and Queen’s ‘A Night At The Opera’, it quickly became a commercial and critical success. By early 2007, it had gone Platinum and produced several hit singles, including anthemic title track ‘Teenagers’.

After extensive touring and taking time out to regroup, ‘Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys’ arrived in 2010. Between 2012 and 2013, they followed it up with ‘Conventional Weapons’, a series of five singles originally recorded during the ‘Danger Days’ sessions. A month later, My Chemical Romance announced their breakup, and a year on, their greatest hits collection ‘May Death Never Stop You: The Greatest Hits 2001–2013’ appeared to mark a definitive end to the band’s career.

Gerard Way released his debut solo album in 2014, and a 10th anniversary edition of ‘The Black Parade’ dropped in 2016.

In late 2019, My Chemical Romance surprised fans with news of their reunion. Their first show in LA sold out in just four minutes. Shortly after, the band revealed three UK tour dates in Milton Keynes. However, after postponing the shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they finally took place in 2022 – marking a triumphant return to the stage.

Following a headline set at When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas, performing their album The Black Parade in its entirety, the band are currently performing across North America as part of their Long Live The Black Parade Tour. They also recently premiered new, unreleased track, ‘War Beneath the Rain’, at their Dodger Stadium show in LA.

Many are speculating whether the band could headline Download Festival next year, set to take place from 10–14 June at Donington Park, though no official details have been confirmed.

Don’t miss My Chemical Romance when they return to the UK in summer 2026!
