The chance of seeing a legend, who has been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame three – yes three – times, in an intimate gig, (if you can call the Symphony Hall intimate), only comes around very occasionally. And you have to admit Graham Nash is a legend. What a career he has had. Six decades of great music, and this was a chance to see him perform some of his classics and some newer stuff. Interspersed with stories of his amazing life, and what a life, not just musically, The Hollies, Crosby, Stills and Nash, and with CSN with Neil Young added, plus songwriting for many others and solo – so the list goes on.
It was great to see this man still so passionate about his music, although, as he said, some of the songs tonight he has sung thousands of times, but he will still sing them to us like it was the first time. And he did. Occasionally after a number, and not just the older stuff, you could see him physically take a deep sigh after finishing it, a true writer from the heart. The stories were funny, moving, and damn right mad; he is one man I would love to have dinner with, the stuff he could tell you, wow.
As for the songs, well pure classics,’ Bus Stop’, ‘Marrakesh Express’, ‘Love The One You’re With’, ‘Our House’ and of course the phenomenal ‘Teach Your Children Well’ were all there. Some songs we had never heard before, like an amazing version of a song called ‘Cathedral’, from CSN, stunning. He may be 83 but he still has a terrific voice, and the ability to write a song about quite mundane things or events and turn them into magic. What a talent that is, only a few have it. A brilliant night, glad we were there.
